After the adoption of the Model Law on Electronic Commerce by the General Assembly of the United Nations on January 30; 1997, India enacted the Information Technology Act, 2000, which came into effect from October 17, 2000. The information Technology has become a significant player in today's trade especially with the introduction of e-commerce. Interpretation of laws relating to IT has become very important today with the resultant amendments in the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act, Bankers Books Evidence Ac t and the Reserve, Bank of India Act and with the establishment of the Certifying Authorities and the Cyber Regu lation Appellate Tribunal.
